Time free from workplace obligations seems to become ever more difficult to keep. According to a recent study, 70% of workers struggle with finding a work-life system that works for them.

This means more than 2/3 of your staff are not proactive, distracted, and operating below their potential.

For many in the workforce, achieving any type of work-life balance can seem like a myth, especially when technology has made us accessible around the clock and work has become boundariless.

But,

Despite the demanding realities our information industry forces upon us,  there are those that have managed to carve out satisfying and meaningful lives outside of their work.

Too often people believe that to achieve success, one needs to give up their personal life. (This is not true!)

They do not believe that work-life balance is possible in a meaningful way, but it is!

There is no better way to demonstrate this than to hear it directly from some of the most successful people in the world.

7 Habits Of Successful People Who Have Achieved Work-Life Balance

 

 

#1. THEY LIVE LIFE BY DESIGN NOT DEFAULT

 

Most people treat “life” as something that just happens.  They’re victims, who react to life and let outside circumstances decide their fate, their agenda.   They live by Default.

On the other hand, there are those, no none achievers.  They walk into any situation and grab it by the horns. They determine the outcome of their day, their week. These people create the life they want to live and don’t accept anything less. They live by Design.

Instead of just letting life happen to you, make some choices to achieve work-life balance. Think about what you want from life and how you want to invest your time?

 

#2. THEY DON’T FOLLOW UNPRODUCTIVE CYCLES

 

Work-life balance going off the rails in your life is usually a result of allowing old and unproductive cycles to continue to control you.

Let old habits and old ways of thinking slide, or you will!

Endeavour to be intentional and uncompromising concerning this.

Winners who stay on top of the surf are good at staying on track by making conscious decisions to continually talk to the important people (mentors, spiritual leaders) in their lives about what is working or not, and make decisions to change direction if needed.

As they say, “when you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount” – get a new horse, and a new whip!

Life is progressive. Situations change. If you don’t realise this, you’ll end up in a place you don’t want to be.

 

 

#3. THEY INVEST TIME FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND IMPORTANT INTERESTS

 

People who have managed to carve out a work-life balance, that works for them don’t just wait to see what time is left over after work.

Make it a point to plan and book “time off,” to spend outside of work and vigorously guard this time.

Emergencies are unavoidable.

Unfavourable situations don’t need permission to show up in our lives, from work to other matters; learn to resist any intrusion of this time strongly.

It’s been statistically proven, one of the greatest regrets upon dying is the deep regret that:

“I wish I spent more time with the people I love.”

It’s easy to let that time slip away, but once it’s gone you can never get it back.

Besides, as Steve Blank author of the Startup Owners Manual stated it, “When you’re gone, would you rather have your gravestone say:

‘He never missed a meeting? or one that said, He was a great father.’”

 

I’m so grateful that I’ve learnt to protect this time, regardless!

 

 

 

#4. THEY HAVE DETERMINED THEIR SUCCESS SILHOUETTE

 

People who manage work-life balance have developed a strong sense of who they are, their values and what is important to them.

If your desire for success is greater than your desire to be principled, you will compromise on the essentials of true success.

Having a success silhouette for everything you do helps you determine what success means to you.

Listen to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this point:

 

“Reconsider your definitions. We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries or the size of our automobiles rather than by the quality of our service and relationship to mankind.”

 

Wow! That’s food for thought….?

 

 

#5. THEY DETECT AND DUMP DISTRACTIONS FAST

 

People who maintain balance are able to turn off their electronic devices to enjoy uninterrupted, quality time doing things they value and enjoy.

They realise that multitasking is a myth and focusing on the task at hand is the key to “living in the moment.”

They learn to “compartmentalise” their time.

Don’t confuse having a career with having a life or a family life. If you are a spiritual person like me, invite God into every department of your life.

Learn to be present in each moment, experience and savour life.

Consider the power of meditation (see my article: 7 Sacred Minutes with God), listen to more music (I love classical), do physical activity (I could improve a whole lot on this one) or some other interest that allows you to get away from the pressures of everyday life – to relax, rejuvenate and regenerate your spirit, soul and body.

Remember, “balance is not better time management, but better boundary management.”

 

#6. THEY ARE PASSIONATELY GOAL DRIVEN

 

Many people go through life and get caught up in situations and circumstances that end up controlling them.

Generally, 80% of all of the activity that you are involved in right now is taking you nowhere.

Discern what is the 20 % of things that matter and move towards your dream and give yourself wholeheartedly to it.

Balance can only be achieved when plans are defined around time frames and a passionate determination to make some sacrifices to get what you want in the end. For example, many entrepreneurs typically plan to spend a substantial amount of time in the early part of their businesses.

Those that achieve balance down the road see this as a sacrifice that will allow them to spend extra time and energy in other areas they are passionate about once the business is established.

The greater the sacrifice the greater the glory of leisure!

 

 

 

#7. THEY SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH THE WISE AND CARING

 

People who have achieved good balance have surrounded themselves with other people who are wiser them they are (either through books or friendships.) As the ancient proverbs say, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

Gravitate towards wise people and move away from the unwise. How can you tell the wise apart from the foolish?

The answer is very simple actually,

The wise, have a consistent track record or a history of making wise decisions which are evident in their lives.

Don’t be fooled with titles, positions or money. Find a strategic life and business mentor and also built a strong support network, (family, friends, church family) they can depend upon to help them get through difficult times.

 

The most important person in my life next to my Maker is my wife. Listen to this piece of wisdom from, Sheryl Sandberg, (COO of Facebook),

 

“The most important career decision you’ll make is who your life partner is.”

I love this!

 

And finally,  as you endeavour to find work-life balance, learn to become more generous with your life, time, talent and money, wisely. Extend yourselves to help out others, serve your community and Church.

Have a variety of interests, don’t just live for yourself or your family. Always be open to new learning and possibilities.  I love this statement from Zuckerberg,

 

“I spend most of my time thinking about how to connect the world and serve our community better, but a lot of that time isn’t in our office or meeting with people or doing what you’d call real work. I take a lot of time just to read and think about things by myself.” ―Mark Zuckerberg

Experience life to the fullest. Don’t just exist, live!  

 

The integrity of punctuality is not holding others back with your inadequacies.

“If time is money,” it is said that punctuality is the single most important habit of successful entrepreneurs.

Punctuality is a disposition of reverence that respects the time of others. It is an understanding that time is important, and the time of others is valuable.

Punctuality is not only showing up on time for the meeting; which speaks volumes about your character, but the absence of punctuality relates to disorganisation, tardiness, hindering others and procrastination. When we detain others, we also infringe upon their reputation and opportunities.

For example, an employee who is habitually late or a volunteer who constantly strolls into a meeting a few minutes after it has started, violates the organisation’s culture as well as encroaches upon the integrity of the other leaders.

When we impede others, we are robbing them and stealing from them.

Being where you’re supposed to be, when you’re supposed to be, as promised, without exception, without excuse, every time, all the time, is more valuable than what most people realise.
Time is a treasure and an investment that pays off. We are not to waste or take advantage of others.

Many people with whom you work or serve with, considers punctuality not worth the effort or practice.

But suppose you were given only one day to live your complete lifetime. You are born at 7:00 a.m. and go to sleep and die at 11:00 p.m. You have a total of 16 hours and a lifespan equivalent of 80 years of living.
At 10:00 a.m. you will be 15,
At 12:00 noon, you would be well into your 20s, and,
At 3:00 p.m. you would be 40, and half way through your life, and,
At 6:00 p.m. you would be 55 and,
At 8:00 p.m. you would be 65, getting the idea?

 

The question then is how important is the “Character of Punctuality” for you and your organisation?

 

Consider the following facts:

The Punctual Person Gains the Advantage Over Everybody.

Being punctual gives you the Rights, the position—to expect and demand that others treat your time with the utmost respect.

One cannot hope to have others respect your time if you show little or no respect for theirs.

If you’re not punctual, you have no leverage, no moral authority.

If You Cannot Keep an Appointment on Time, You Cannot be Trusted in Other Ways.

There is a link between respect for others’ time and respect for others’ opinions, property, rights, business.

A person reveals a great deal about himself by his punctuality or lack of punctuality.

Punctuality is linked to integrity and sometimes success, which smart people are aware of, and I have come to appreciate over the years.

 

Smart, successful and influential people already know and secretly use this ‘factor’ to make their determinations about who they will do business with or not, buy from or not, help or not, trust or not.

You are naïve if you think a successful person does not have his own little “system” for judging people. Successful people have an “instant rejection criteria,” to save time in determining who they want to deal with and who they don’t.

If you are not a punctual person, others whom you wish to influence positively, will negatively judge you as an irresponsible, disorganised, dishonourable and as a dysfunctional person.

As someone once said, there are only two good reasons for being late for a meeting: one: you’re dead and two: you want to be.

Most executives and managers believe they don’t have enough time. Yet we live in a century where the rise of technology has created efficiencies in our productivity which has helped reduce the amount of time and effort it takes to do many of our tasks and jobs; giving us more time.

So why do you still complain that you don’t have any time?

We’ve all been granted a 24-hour day. Why do the highly efficient seem to get more out of their day than others, yet both started and ended with the same amount of hours – Why?

Do We Have Enough Time – Is Not the Issue

The real issue is how we choose to invest our time. The issue is not whether we manage our time. The real issue is how we manage our lives.

Effective leaders don’t spend time, they invest time. There is an important distinction.

Often you hear the performance experts teach on “Time Management”. However, there is no such thing as time management.  

No matter how wealthy or wise you are, time cannot be managed.

Time cannot be bought, sold, stopped, saved or carried over into the next day.

The wealthiest individual cannot buy one single second more to add to his day, nor can the wisest individual bank it in a vault and use it some day.

People often say, “I will make more time…” I often respond with, “If you have the formula to make more time, please share it with me.” You cannot make more time and neither can you manage it.

Effective leaders don’t manage time, they manage their priorities.

‘Priority Management’ is the secret to best business practice and is an effective tool that yields the highest return on productivity with less output. As an executive, it is vital to understand the art of priority management as a tool for business efficiency. In business you have financial systems, sales systems and operational systems, why don’t you have a system to monitor priorities?

Incorporate Priority Management Practices into Your Daily Agenda to Create an Effective Priority Management System.

If you want to gain more productivity out of each day, I suggest that you follow these Priority Management Practices to create a Priority Management System that works for you:

1. Embrace an Empowering Mindset

Any hesitancy regarding direction of your goals is a stress inducer and a time waster.

You may be thinking what does this point have to do with priority management. Let me briefly explain. Making your success personal is the first and most important step to productivity.  Worry is the biggest time waster. Worrying is the most unproductive and futile activity. The average person thinks about 20, 000 thoughts a day. Unfortunately, 70%–80% of those thoughts are negative. This means if you are an executive, you are spending a lot of time thinking unproductively. These deleterious thoughts stop you from accomplishing what you want to  because it creates fear, doubt, indecisiveness and immobility of action. Any hesitancy regarding direction of your goals is a stress inducer and a time waster.  (See my next article for more information…)

2. Start Your Day the Night Before

Effective leaders create their game plan before, never during the game.

Effective leaders create their game plan before, never during the game.  Your day starts the night before. Delineate your priorities the night before for the following day. Pay close attention to the ‘who’s and what’s’ that I call ‘time thieves’ – these stop you from reaching your goals. If you are derailed, get back on track and move forward with precision focus. Keep track on how you invest your time throughout the day.

3. Let Your Agenda Run Your Day

Let your agenda run your day, not the problems or emergencies of other people.

Let your agenda run your day, not other people’s problems or emergencies. Your agenda is like two identical suitcases. Why is it that one person can pack more into it than the other? The answer is simple. It is what you decide to pack in. Have you ever been on a business trip and packed an item into your suitcase and travelled across the globe to realise you did not need it. This is effort with zero or little return.

The Number One Priority in Business Today Is Eliminating Distractions and Interruptions.

Two of the greatest inventions of my time have been the laptop computer and wifi. The laptop means I no longer have to stay in one place to be productive in my business life. Wifi has allowed me to stay connected to people all around the world with the touch of a button.

My greatest frustration is when either of these do not work. Sometimes wifi cannot be used because I am out of a wifi connectivity zone. Sometimes I cannot use my laptop because I have not properly charged it, and then the charge runs out while I am on an airplane – the epitome of unproductiveness!

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. – Psalm 143:8

Both of these situations mean I am unable to tap into the resources that allow me to fulfil my calling in my work to the fullest.

The morning time with God is much like these situations.

God pours His Word into my spirit, and I am recharged. This recharging has an important effect on my day. It allows me the greatest opportunity to hear the small voice that directs my steps. If I am not “connected,” I risk following my own ways of fulfilling the duties of my day. It sets forth the opportunity for God to speak into my spirit what He desires for me each day. It allows me to focus on God’s purposes, not mine.

The only way to know someone is to spend time with him or her.

The only way to discern the voice of another is to hear that person’s voice.

David the author of this Psalm, was a warrior, king and businessman. He understood this principle of connecting with God in the morning.

His morning allowed him to connect with God’s love, renew his trust in Him and hear His directions for his life.

Shouldn’t you and I do the same?

Much of modern Christian businesses’ operation is ‘Ishmael’ – born not of God and maintained by self. God is not interested in your success as much as He is in your death, so that HIS success can be realised through you!

This is why the Church has such little impact – there are too many marketplace believers who have not yet died to themselves so that Christ can live fully through them.

 

“At that time, however, the son born by the flesh persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now. But what does the Scripture say? “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
– Genesis 4:28-29

When believers come to the end of themselves, they will find the beginning of God for their lives. They will live through the power of the Holy Spirit and begin to see the reality of a living Gospel that truly impacts lives, workplaces, cities and nations.

“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to those he loves” Ps 127:1-2.

How do business leaders die so that Christ can become their ground zero?
It usually takes a crisis of notable proportions for most people to relinquish the control of their lives.

It means we come to the end of ourselves and our striving to control the events in our lives and we finally come to the place where we can say, “Lord, I surrender. Please take full control of my life.”

“I tell you the truth unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” John 12:24-26.

Let Go of Control and Let God Make You a Success His way!

In 2012, I took my first trip to -beloved Israel. I visited the original temple built by David’s son, Solomon. Our group took an underground tour of the temple. Which allowed us to see the incredibly huge, square slabs that were used to lay the foundation of the temple.

“He erected the pillars in the front of the temple, one to the south and one to the north. The one to the south he named Jakin and the one to the north Boaz.”- Chronicles 3:15-17

Pillars are designed to provide the foundation to a structure. These impressive cylinders, towering from its concrete foundation,  provided the height and strength to connect the roof to the lower foundation.

What’s fascinating is the name of the two pillars that stood in front of the temple: Jakin, which means it establishes. And Boaz means in it is

Jakin, which means, “it establishes.” And Boaz means “in it is strength.”  Jakin was a priest.  Boaz was a business man also known as a “king” in the scriptures. He was extremely wealthy and was also Ruth’s kinsman redeemer whose lineage would be traced all the way to Christ. It is a picture of two people God would use to represent the entrance into God’s presence and the forming of the foundation of Church.

The Bible says we are both kings and priests, but we also have two separate distinct roles to play in his Body.
Kings and Priests are joining together to bring the Presence of God into the area that has been forbidden territory – the marketplace. It is only when this partnership cooperates in unity, mutual respect, and affirmation that we see God’s power released. Kings and Priest, this is God’s unbeatable combination. and through this model,  we can bring the Presence of God back into all spheres of the marketplace,  to transform cities and nations.

, , DISTINGUISH YOURSELF FROM DEAD FISH

After executing goals with efficiency, building congenial relationships with customers both internal and external, a leader must be an innovator!

No matter where you go, you will always encounter problems.  Being a great innovator means you are a great problem solver. You use your creativity and innovative skills to solve old and new problems.

Most people spent more time and energy going around problems than in trying to solve them.

  1. Don’t go with the flow

Only dead fish go with the flow. Don’t criticise, but challenge the conventional wisdom of political, business and social norms. Innovation is the change that will unlock new value.

You may be interested to know why Japanese fishing ships keep small sharks in their fish tanks? What the fishing companies found was that because they were having to go further and further from Japan to catch tuna, if they froze the fish, consumers didn’t like the taste.  When they put the tuna fish in the tank, they would become sluggish, which apparently also affected their taste. The shark, however, would keep the tuna darting around the entire return trip to avoid being eaten.  Always seek ways to stay fresh!

 

  1. Don’t patch up old worn out systems

 

Whatever works well today will someday wear out. Even my current iPhone 7, will need replacement. And when I do replace it, the new phone will likely be filled with new apps, new features, new ways to learn and communicate, not just patches on top of an old, worn-out system.

If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.

  1. Don’t talk about change unless you have a spine of steel

 

Moderate change accomplishes nothing of substance. The actual change is hard; therefore, it is absolutely necessary to be radical.  It is more important to do what’s right for the company and customer than pleasing the boss or some other high-level executive who’s not willing to move forward!

 

  1. Don’t expect to change unless you are not willing to risk your comfort-zone

 

Radical approaches are seldom safe, or predictable. That is why so few embrace them – but we should! You cannot break out of a comfort zone unless you understand what needs changing, take action and keep it up!

 

 

  1. Don’t expect to invent the future by romanticising the past

 

A leader of innovation knows that he cannot reach the unknown until he let goes of what’s familiar and safe. Although a leader must honour the past, His goal is to invent the future.

The 21st century flows directly from innovation, not optimisation. It is not gained by perfecting the old or the known, but by imperfectly seizing the unknown.
